SEMPER PARATUS
BEING PREPARED FOR PERILOUS TIMES
I last wrote about the dangers of the Normalcy Bias, otherwise known as the “Ostrich Factor”. I’d like to also point out the positive side of considering our perilous times.
Being prepared is a mental state. Remember, the most important tools and supplies stored are those stored between your two ears.
In her excellent book, The Unthinkable, Who Survives in a Disaster and Who Doesn’t, author Amanda Ripley describes a common response to extreme danger and feeling trapped—Paralysis. The greater the fear, the greater the paralysis. There are several ways to combat this:
1.Reduce fear—remember the last blog entry describing our father’s 366 admonitions to “Do Not Fear”? Way back then He knew fear would increase our inability to react properly to severe danger and reminded us that He is with us. In Hebrews 13:5 He says “…I will never desert you, now will I ever forsake you.”
2. Preparation—Thinking through how we would react in certain circumstances increases our likelihood of reacting quickly and effectively when the time comes. Concerning those who survive plane crashes, Ms Ripley states: “The National Transportation Safety Board has found that passengers who read the safety information card are less likely to get hurt in an emergency.”
3. Ms. Ripley offers a number of pages on combating the fear that can cause paralysis. One very simple technique, taught by combat trainers, is called “combat breathing”. Think of it as Combat Lamaze. Breathe in for 4 seconds; hold it 4 seconds; breathe out 4 seconds. Sounds too simple, doesn’t it? But it works. And, while you are doing this…remember…He is with you!
4. Strong, decisive leadership—If you are caught in an emergency, have planned ahead and are acting logically to save yourself—and then see others amid this paralysis, you can sometimes save them by giving them clear, strong, loud instructions.
All of the above is to underscore the positive effects of combating the Normalcy Bias. Thoughtfully consider the times, then prepare to care for yourself, your loved ones, and for those around you in need…without fear!
